Itinerary
We will start the bike tour through the Old Town of Valencia at the Puerta del Mar. We’ll pass in front of the Palace of Justice and we will go into the historic quarter, going around the Parterre park and then take Nau street.
Further on, we’ll enter to El Carmen neighbourhood and ride through its most emblematic streets. Then we will visit the most touristic points of our city: Plaza Redonda, Plaza de la Reina and Plaza de la Virgen, Torres de Serrano… We will also pass near several museums, such as the Centro Cultural del Carmen, the IVAM or the MUVIM.
The final section of the tour passes through the Estación del Norte, the Plaza de Toros and Calle Colón, one of the most commercial streets in the city.
The proposed itinerary ends at the same starting point, the Puerta del Mar, from where, if you want more, you can link up with our Tour along the River Túria or with the Tour of the City of Arts and Sciences.
A bit of history…
València, the capital of the Valencian Community, sits on the fertile plain of the river Túria. Around an old central district, new neighbourhoods with wide avenues have developed into a bustling commercial and industrial city.
The city was one of the Greek settlements on the Mediterranean coast, later the Romans and Visigoths settled here. Conquered by the Arabs, Valencia achieved great political and cultural importance in the 8th century as the capital of a kingdom whose dominions stretched from the Ebro to the Segura, where Arab irrigation systems gave rise to the agricultural wealth of the area. In 1096 it was conquered by El Cid, reconquered by the Almoravids and finally became part of the Crown of Aragon in 1238, after the conquest of Jaime I.
The Muslim inhabitants of the region continued to preserve their laws and religion in the kingdom of Valencia until their expulsion in 1609, a century and a half later than in the kingdom of Castile. The expulsion of the Moors brought with it the economic ruin of Valencia, coinciding with the decline of its port. In the War of Succession. The city fought on the side of the House of Austria, and when the Bourbon King Philip V was victorious, the city lost all its privileges. During the Civil War it was the seat of the Spanish government for a long time. Nowadays, Valencia is the main economic and cultural centre of the Levantine coast.
In March, Valencia celebrates one of the most spectacular festivals in Spain: the Fallas. Around 15 March, the ninots, large papier-mâché figures that are generally satirical, are installed in the streets of the city. The fallas are burnt on the night of 19 March, the feast of Saint Joseph. During the festivities you can see huge fireworks displays, firecrackers are set off all over the city and the fun is guaranteed.
